Editorial Internship Program at Seattle magazine

Opportunity awaits you as an editorial intern at Seattle magazine. Our interns gain hands-on experience working closely with top editors in an environment that is both creative and collaborative. As an intern, you will be an integral part of the team responsible for researching, writing and editing this premier monthly publication.

Enduring enthusiasm, curiosity and a love of the written word are essential prerequisites for the position. (Typing ability is a must). You will be called upon regularly to use your excellent verbal communication skills and to demonstrate a helpful attitude. Attention to detail, even a perverse obsession with it, will come in handy. No previous experience is necessary.

Along with the standard internship program described below, there are several additional internship opportunities:
Research internship: Candidates with an exceptional eye for detail, and a special interest in gathering and analyzing data may apply for our research internship. You will work closely with our research editor on a wide variety of projects such as best neighborhoods, top doctors and best places to work.

Writing internship: This is an opportunity for a beginning writer who is focused on a career in writing and has a special interest in the narrative form that dominates magazine journalism. Writing interns can expect to receive one-on-one coaching from Seattle magazine editors, and will be given several longer assignments that will be published in the magazine. Candidates must submit published writing samples with their application, to be considered for this internship. There is flexibility in the length of this internship (it may be less than six months).

Overall Internship Responsibilities

Interns help us bring up-and-coming trends home to the readers. Observing life in the city and on the street, interns are the eyes, ears and feet of the magazine. You will work on a wide range of projects, from the glamorous to the grind. You will become familiar with the varied pace of a magazine's production schedule. No two internships are the same. To some extent, you will be given responsibilities based on your strengths and your initiative. Projects might include the following: proofreading articles, fact-checking stories, writing sidebars, researching writing assignments, conducting interviews and investigations, attending concerts and parties, reviewing restaurants, responding to queries, clipping and filing potential story leads, logging artwork, and mailing returns.

Openings
Unpaid internships are available and require a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week in our office, during business hours (except as noted above). Internships last for six months. Work schedules are usually either a morning shift or an afternoon shift.
