One of the many enduring lessons of our economic downturn is the need for independent businesses to be nimble—and perhaps no new Seattle shop better embodies that philosophy than Assemble Gallery and Studio, which opened on Greenwood Avenue in November 2009. Billing itself as a gallery space, workshop studio and retail shop, Assemble offers one-stop shopping for art and craft aficionados. Owners and local craft connoisseurs Andie Wurster and Emily Grosse aim to “showcase craft as modern art” by featuring exhibits on the walls, art for sale and instruction in how to make your own crafty art. The shop offers regular crafting classes and custom workshops on site, including sewing, knitting, book binding, printing and the occasional unusual offering, such as felt-moustache making (class times and prices vary). The welcoming space stands as both a hopeful sign of life after last winter’s alarming string of arsons in the neighborhood and a delightful example of the creative thinking required for our new economy. Tues.–Sat. 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Sun. noon–5 p.m. 7406 Greenwood Ave. N 206.913.2470 assembleshop.com.
