How to create a beach-cottage style

Seaside Chic
Every summer in the Pacific Northwest, as the warm sun seductively mingles with the salt air, we get itchy feet for the beach. Just as our clothes, and our moods, get decidedly brighter, there’s a desire to lighten up our interiors. The beach-cottage look remains a perennial favorite here. We dream of tailored, crisp white linens and dreamy gauzy pale drapery surrounding furniture and accessories with weathered finishes and natural, woven textures. This season, even if you aren’t beachside, why not go coastal with your home décor?

John Stevens in splendid seaside style. Oly’s Hanna chair and ottoman from Masins, Somerset Bay accent table from J. Garner Home at the Seattle Design Center, vintage linen pillows and painted footstool from Red Ticking, galvanized-metal ship’s lamp (on table), green glass float and naval valve wheel from Cuttysark and lanterns and faux coral from Pottery Barn.

Begin your beach-combing with the basics: For designer furnishings with a sophisticated, summery look, be sure to see new pieces by Oly and Aidan Gray at the Masins boutique at the Bravern Shops (1111 NE Eighth St., Bellevue; 425.453.1300; masins.com). The Somerset Bay Collection, available through J. Garner Home (to the trade, Seattle Design Center, 5701 Sixth Ave. S, Seattle; 206.762.0597; jgarnerhome.com), features beautifully distressed, painted finishes. A wonderful array of vintage, cottage-style treasures can be found at Red Ticking (2802 E Madison St., Seattle; 206.322.9890; redticking.com). Cuttysark (320 First Ave. S, Seattle; 206.262.1265; cuttyantiques.com) is an absolute must for one-of-a-kind nautical antiques. Finally, to complete your beachside look, check out the coastal-themed accessories from Pottery Barn (multiple locations, including University Village, 4627 26th Ave. NE, Seattle; 206.522.6860; potterybarn.com). [ With a little imagination and a touch of seaside style, any home can be beach-cottage chic.  :
