Fashioning an Old World fireside style

When the air turns brisk and the evenings wet and gloomy, there is no better place in the city to cozy up with a cocktail than at the Fireside Room at the Sorrento Hotel (900 Madison St.), this year, celebrating its 100th anniversary. The secret to the room’s charm is its beautiful blending of appointments. Richly patterned carpets and mahogany paneling make an ideal backdrop for traditional furnishings, while the ambience is further enhanced with clubby, leather wing-back chairs and the majestic fireplace with its original pottery tile hearth and landscape mantelpiece.

To fashion an Old-World fireside feel for your dwelling, think refined and relaxed. An absolute must are fine leather furnishings, check out Hancock & Moore’s comfy collections at Masins (Seattle and Bellevue; masins.com), and beautiful fireplace screens and accessories, such as wares by Stone Manufacturing (stonemfg.com), found at the Bellevue Fireplace Shop (208 105th Ave. NE, Bellevue; bellevuefireplaceshop.com). Then add an elegant throw or two, a covey of overstuffed pillows and, to capture the flicker of firelight, a few unusual accessories, such as a cut-crystal decanter or a pair of antique lustres (candlesticks hung with prisms). For luxurious designer throws, don’t miss the Neiman Marcus Gift Gallery at the new Bravern shops (11111 NE Eighth St., Bellevue; neimanmarcus.com); and artisan Mary Kenngott (425.821.4582; marykenngott@verizon.net) is a fabulous source for custom-woven pillows and other one-of-a-kind home textiles. Finally, oh-so-subtly heighten the fragrance of your crackling fire with Diptyque’s feu de bois candles and room sprays, available at Barneys New York (Pacific Place; barneys.com).
