Scoop: The Must List
Our top to-do's for August
GLIMPSE A LEGEND
1. Bigfoot Bash and Bounty
The Northwest’s most notorious man of mystery gets his due this month in southeastern Washington: The Bigfoot Bash and Bounty toasts the elusive lug with live music, food, discussions led by Bigfoot believers and a scavenger hunt for—guess who? But if you find him, don’t shoot—the event location is the only officially sanctioned Sasquatch refuge in the world. 8/28–8/30. Times vary. Free. Home Valley Park, near Carson; bigfootbashandbounty.com
PUT THE PEDAL TO THE METAL
2. Bicycle Sundays
If you need more evidence to prove our city was eco before eco was cool, consider Bicycle Sundays, a summerlong event sponsored by Seattle Parks & Recreation that has been going on for the last 43 years. Almost every summer Sunday, Lake Washington Boulevard is closed to car traffic and opened to bikers of all stripes. It’s the perfect chance to exercise with the family, take in the beauty of Lake Washington and, of course, be green. 8/9, 8/16, 8/23, 8/30. 10 am–6 pm. Free. Lake Washington Boulevard, between Mount Baker Beach and Seward Park. seattle.gov/parks/bicyclesunday/
HAVE A QUICKIE
3. 14/48 Theater Festival
Winner of a 2008 Mayor’s Arts Award, the fast-paced 14/48 Theater Festival has been entertaining local audiences for 12 years running. And we do mean running—the intrepid local writers, directors and actors involved conceive, create, rehearse and perform seven brand-new plays over 48 hours (repeated twice per evening). Writers have roughly 12 hours to write a 10-minute play—from scratch, each night—then actors and directors take the next 12 hours to rehearse. Et voilà, it’s showtime! Don’t blink and miss the fun. 7/31–8/1 & 8/7–8/8. Times vary. $18. On the Boards, 100 W Roy St.; 206.217.9888; 1448fest.com
GO BATTY
4. Bats Northwest Bat Walk
They may not be fine or feathered, but bats are indeed our friends (they eat insects! and pollinate flowers!). Gain a new appreciation for these much-maligned mammals on a Green Lake bat walk with Bats Northwest. Experts—armed with “bat detectors”—will be on hand to share bat facts and offer tips on locating these wily echolocators. Note: caped polyurethane costume not included. 8/12, 7:45 p.m.; 8/27, 7:15 p.m. Free. Green Lake, on the grassy knoll across from the Bathhouse Theatre. 206.256.0406; batsnorthwest.org
SWING IT
5. Century Masters of Lindy Hop and Tap
The goings-on at City Hall don’t often inspire dancing—except during Seattle Presents, the Mayor’s Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs’ year-round lunchtime series specifically designed to get toes tapping. This month, don’t miss the Century Masters of Lindy Hop and Tap (copresented by Century Ballroom), swing dance superstars who will teach you how to add groove to your moves. All you have to do is explain to your boss why you came back from lunch so sweaty. 8/13. Noon. Free. City Hall Plaza, 600 Fourth Ave.; 206.684.7171; seattle.gov/arts/community/seattle_presents.asp
