Hemp soft-serve takes center stage at Capitol Hill's new nutrition bar

If you spent any time on Capitol Hill last summer, you likely took your licks at one of three new frosty-treat purveyors—Molly Moon’s, Bluebird or Old School Frozen Custard. But did you miss the hemp soft-serve? Healeo (1520 15th Ave.; 206.453.5066), an organic, superfood nutrition bar that opened in May, is the first business venture by Seattleite Justin Brotman (son of Costco founder Jeff Brotman). The crisp, modern shop serves surprisingly silky, vegan “ice cream” year-round, made with hemp—yes, hemp. The hemp milk (a blend of hemp seeds and water) is crafted in the store, and the resulting soft-serve (available in chocolate or vanilla; $4–$6) can be paired with organic toppings like golden berries, cacao nibs and coconut. If you’re seeking something savory, Healeo offers a variety of vegan snacks to go, including House of the Sun’s local, raw, organic, vegan (phew!) cuisine, delivered to the store by bike to reduce fears of carbon footprints. Or try E3 Live, an algae harvested from Klamath Lake in Oregon and touted as the most nutrient-dense food on the planet. (Take it as a shot, or, for those less accustomed to swilling lake algae, as an addition to a smoothie—we recommend the tart, pink Goji Glory.) Also available is an extensive line of certified organic supplements and teas that Brotman spent the last two years creating specifically for Healeo.
