The Magnetic Fields take a folksy turn
Fans of indie band the Magnetic Fields know better than to make assumptions about what new albums are likely to sound like. Led by the endearingly mopey Stephin Merritt, the band has taken to giving itself musical makeovers since it first formed in 1991. Sometimes the sound is synth-heavy, at other times indie-pop; we’ve seen noisy and distorted, and of late, a certain folk influence has made itself known. In fact, Merritt calls the new album, Realism (released last month), “my folk album.” Which is exciting—just don’t get too comfortable.
