A strip of historic buildings in Oysterville includes a church open to the public
Our recent road trip took us to Long Beach—that long, slender peninsula in southern Washington that might be best known these days for its August kite festival. We had a great time flying kites—it’s hard not to be successful when you have a very steady wind. But we also explored Oysterville, a National Historic District that’s mostly a collection of homes along Willapa Bay. As you drive along this side of the Long Beach peninsula, huge piles of oyster shells along the road are frequent reminders that you’re in oyster country.
When you reach Oysterville, plan to get out of the car and read the plaques in front of most of the homes, detailing the history of the original settlement.

Then don’t miss the cemetery just a few blocks away (look for road signs directing you). Many of the gravesites are quite old, and tell of sailors lost at sea, and children who died in infancy. It’s a poignant snapshot of a time not all that long ago.

On our little road trip, we enjoyed the diversion of the local sights and activities, but mostly we enjoyed getting away.
