Fashion Preview: Luly Yang Couture

Seattle designer crafts an ocean-themed collection for her annual fundraiser on Friday

By Kate Calamusa October 6, 2010

Most of the time (okay, 99 percent of the time) you can show up wearing jeans to just about anything in Seattle. On Friday however, we get our 1 percent, once in a blue moon, must dress-up date at Luly Yang Couture’s annual fall runway show benefiting Seattle Children’s.

The event will be as elegant as Yang’s beautifully-draped gowns: the fashion designer has not only chosen a new location, but taken design inspiration from the Seattle Aquarium venue, creating garments in sea greens and blues. Like last year’s show where live Grecian statues dotted the Fairmont Ballroom, the Ocean theme will run throughout the evening, the runway set against the wall to ceiling aquarium tanks.

Yang’s PR manager Rose Dennis gave me a little inside scoop on two collection details: Yang dyed ostrich feathers in vibrant oranges, burgundies and reds to pop against the blue green tones. Attached to gowns, they create the effect of floating on water. In another segment, gowns will be worn down the runway with a black light backdrop to stunning effect.

We’re guessing those are only couple of the many surprises Yang and event coordinators True Color Events have up their sleeves, among them the top-secret finale scene being coordinated by Gene Juarez Team Artistic.

Last I heard tickets were scarce, if not gone (but check here just in case) so follow the crew here for up-to-the-minute info on Friday: @kcalamusa, @rachelhartrios, @seattlebridemag and @InsideSeattle.
