The penguins are on the march!  No, the penguins aren’t staging a protest - they’re celebrating the opening of their new home at the Woodland Park Zoo. The Penguins on the March program will showcase over 60 penguin statues who will strut their stuff around Seattle this summer. About 20 of the little sartorial supermodels were designed by professional artists. The rest of the rookery (a fancy name for a group of penguins) were designed by amateur Seattle artists ranging in age from 8 to 80 years old and including local elementary-school students and even a group of adult dancers.

The kickoff celebration for this penguin-esque Project Runway will be held June 12, 10:00 a.m. to noon, at the Space Needle. There will be giveaways, photo-ops with the penguin mascot and the public can view some of the penguin statues before they head to their temporary homes in neighborhoods such as Ballard, Fremont, Greenwood and more. The penguins will mingle with the masses until July 10 when they prepare to be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting the Zoo’s field conservation projects.
