Best Family Ties

Thank the Nordstrom shoeshine family for the gleam in your kicks. The classy professional shiners are led by Seattle’s Morgan Perkins, along with his wife Patsy and sons Brian and Brent, brother-in-law Keith Bushnell and daughter-in-law Sunny Perkins. Morgan has been glossing footwear at the downtown Nordstrom store shine since 1974 (get this: He shined his first shoe at age 9). Tip your hats to the city’s best and brightest shiner.

Best Whip, er, Snapper
(Bothell, 11812 North Creek

Jonesing for a bullwhip? Indiana Jones fans can snap up an authentic whip at rugged retailer David Morgan. Morgan, 82, has crafted more than 30 8- to 10-foot Kangaroo skin whips for the Indy series since the Raiders of the Lost Ark release in 1981. What are you waiting for? Get cracking!

Best Posthumous Donation
Ric Weiland
One of Microsoft’s first employees, Ric Weiland (who died in 2006) was recognized earlier this year for leaving his estimated $175 million estate to numerous local and national charities, including $65 million to the Seattle-based LGBT Pride Foundation. The generous gift is believed to be the largest sum donated to any gay rights organization in the United States.

Best Barista for Kidney Transplant Patients
Sandie Andersen
Now that’s customer service! Tacoma Starbucks barista Sandie Andersen eagerly offered her own kidney in November of ‘07 to coffee customer Annamarie Ausnes, who casually mentioned failing kidneys during one of her frequent caffeine runs. Now with three kidneys, Ausnes is surely a Starbucks drinker for life.

Best of 2008: Year of the Rat

11/14/08 5:28 PM
According to the Chinese calendar, 2008 is the year of the rat: a critter widely respected and considered resourceful, perceptive and enterprising—or, wily, cunning, slightly scary and pretty much unstoppable. In Seattle, where rats could practically be the official city mascot, we’re finally allowed to be proud of the skittery underbelly of our city, and beyond. So stop that screaming, get down off that chair and love that rodent.
