The sidewalk signs outside Capitol Hill’s City Market may be small, but the belly laughs they earn are huge. Manager Cãin Morehead draws the appealingly amateur ads, which feature uncanny caricatures ripped from the headlines avowing their love for the convenience store. A few faves: “John Edwards sez, “City Market is my love child!’”

Best New Way to Get Your Passport Stamped

It began as a game between two patrons. Now it’s a citywide challenge that started in September. Explore 26 remodeled and new neighborhood libraries and the centerpiece Central Library, and have a “passport” rubber-stamped at each destination. Turn in completed “travel documents” by January 2, 2009, to be eligible for a raffle of book lovers’ baskets.
Best New Way to Skip the Portland Slog

This new mini-airline offers frequent Seattle-to-Portland commuters something sweet: the guarantee of going from downtown to downtown, in 90 minutes flat. Just hop on at Boeing Field and be in Portland before you finish reading the business section. Parking at Boeing Field: free. Plane ticket: as much as $150 each way. Avoiding the I-5 slog: priceless.
Best New Urban Grocer

The Downtown core got its first full-service grocery store this year with basement-level Kress IGA Supermarket, which offers a one-stop shop for finding the best of local artisans’ goods, such as bread from Tom Douglas’ eateries and baked goods from Julia’s, along with national brands and a traditional butchery.

He’s legendary for his powerful Asian art—wind and water, dragons, koi and phoenix derived from mystical folklore.
