From an ultimate frisbee tournament to a logging rodeo and Duran Duran, here are our top to-do's for this Friday, Saturday and Sunday
FRIDAY, JULY 3
Redmond's Annual Ultimate Frisbee Tournament
In 1990 a handful of local ultimate frisbee teams gathered for a tournament in Redmond’s Sixty Acres Park. Dubbed Potlatch, after the Pacific Northwest Coastal Native American gift-giving ceremony, this skirmish was the beginning of an annual tradition that has grown into one of the largest coed ultimate tournaments in the world. Potlatch is serious competition. But it’s also serious fun, and the camaraderie of those initial games is still in full evidence among the 100-plus teams that battle for the coveted trophy. SATURDAY, JULY 4
Sedro-Woolley Loggerodeo
If you’re feeling so over the Lake Union fireworks show, head 70 miles north to Sedro-Woolley, where the small-town Fourth of July celebration is so big it lasts five days. Called the Loggerodeo, it’s considered the oldest July 4 festival in the state and includes a carnival, a rodeo, chainsaw carving, a logging show, a whisker and beard contest, an antique tractor show, a hot-dog-eating contest, two parades and, of course, fireworks (at Riverfront Park after dusk on 7/4). Wow! No wonder Ivar’s said uncle this year. 7/1–7/5. Times, prices and venues vary. loggerodeo.com
SUNDAY, JULY 5
Duran Duran
Break out the hair mousse and striped shirts and go see Duran Duran. After multiple ups and downs, the 80s new wave band is back together and Hungry Like the Wolf to promote their new work (the band is recording an album with celebrity DJ and producer, Mark Ronson). Head to Marymoor Park this Sunday and you might hear some new tracks from the album set to be released later this year (we're keeping our fingers crossed!). $49.50; Marymoor Park, 6046 West Lake Sammamish Parkway; tickets at Ticketmaster
