When the plot of a play surrounds a group of misfit teens banding together, it can often mean you’re in for an eye-rolling ABC Afterschool Special. But although Speech and Debate (by emerging playwright Stephen Karam) centers on a bunch of young nerds, it manages to refrain from cliché and present an accurate picture of how awkward it is to be a kid dealing with very adult issues—including politics, sexuality and power. Add to that a heavy dose of humor and there’s no need to debate whether you should go.
