Tim Rollins and Kids of Survival

Saturday, January 23 - Monday, May 31
Tim Rollins, an art teacher in the South Bronx, has been inspiring classes of troubled middle school kids (self-proclaimed “Kids of Survival”) since 1982. But this retrospective of their collaborative work (created via a process called “jamming,” in which they make art in response to texts read aloud—from Franz Kafka to comic books) is no collection of smiling suns and happy trees. In fact, the work Rollins produced in collaboration with his students is of such a caliber that it can be seen in the Tate Gallery in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and now here, at the Frye Museum.
