While the Pacific Northwest Ballet’s version of Charles Perrault’s original fairy tale (from 1697) remains true to Marius Petipa’s original Russian choreography (from 1890), as well as Ronald Hynd’s English adaptation (from 1993), it bears little resemblance to Walt Disney’s cinematic take (from 1959). The main similarities, in fact, may be that Tchaikovsky’s glorious score backs up both the PNB’s take and Disney’s, and both versions are highly animated.
