Lots of people fret about what will become of classical art forms (opera, chamber music, ballet) given the disinterest of younger generations, but Seattle boasts several groups that are actually doing something about it. For example, Pacific Musicworks—1 year old this month—is a chamber opera company devoted to preserving opera by interpreting it in daring new ways. In the same vein, Seattle Chamber Players—now in its 20th season—has become known (and loved) for putting an avant-garde spin on classical instrumentation. The two upstart companies have joined forces to produce Songs of Wars I Have Seen, showcasing the musical/theatrical/artistic work of modern-day German composer and director Heiner Goebbels, alongside Monteverdi’s operatic fragment Combattimento. Inspiring new hope for old forms—it’s not to be missed.
