Seattle-based food writer Kim O’Donnel was into Meatless Mondays long before Mario Batali and others shoved this notion onto the mainstream consciousness. Hooray and pass the kale chips! (You’ll find a recipe for those crunchy green gems in her first cookbook.)

Kim’s latest, The Meat Lover’s Meatless Celebrations: Year-Round Vegetarian Feasts (You Can Really Sink Your Teeth Into), drops tomorrow. Why not celebrate by hitting one of the author’s favorite restaurants to mark Meatless Mondays in Seattle?

Here’s her veggie-centric list:

Locol, West Seattle: “This fun little bar puts out tasty, seasonally themed vittles and about half the menu is meatless.”

Oddfellows Cafe: “Linda Derschang & Co. rolled out a Meatless Monday menu in November 2010, as part of the launch for Meat Lover’s Meatless Cookbook, and they have continued the tradition.”

Fonda la Catrina, Georgetown: “There are a ton of meat (from local farms) dishes on this menu but also lots of vegetarian choices. Delighted and surprised with the homemade tortillas, killer black beans and grilled poblano tacos.

Judkins Street Café: “They are doing a monthly Meatless Monday prix fixe dinner. They might feature some of my recipes early next year.”

Portage Bay Café: “Really tempted to try the vegan barbecue sandwich, featuring a slow-cooked jackfruit, slathered with espresso BBQ sauce. They’ve also got a white bean burger.”

Palace Kitchen: “It might seem funny to put Tom Douglas and vegetarian in the same sentence, but over the past year or so, I’ve seen lots of meatless additions to the Palace Kitchen menu. Chef Dezi is veg-enthusiastic, and what he’s putting together is super savory.  I recently had the pleasure of supping on the tagliatelle with roasted cauli, brown butter, caperberries, chilies and other goodies.”

Hungry for more? Ask the author for more suggestions at a meet-and-greet at The Book Larder (4252 Fremont Ave. N) on November 14, 6:30pm.
