Last week, in honor of summer, we suggested 4 Great Seattle Bars for Outdoor Summer Cocktailing. However, it’s hot enough that for many, drinking outside doesn’t sound like that much fun (not to mention the folks who just aren’t fans of the big bright ball in the sky in general).

With that in mind, here are four great bars for drinking indoors, for those who want to get away from the sun and the summertime heat.

Rob Roy, Belltown: Though it has a small deck out front for outdoorsy types, the dim lighting and ’50s lounge style make this legendary cocktail institution a swell spot to drop into when you want to avoid the sunshine while having a finely made drink. Get up on a stool, order up an Aquavit Fizz (with caraway-riffic aquavit, lemon, Cherry Heering, cane sugar and brut rosé sparkling wine), chat a bit with the friendly bartenders, and chill on out.

E. Smith Mercantile, Pioneer Square: Admittedly, the front shopping area of the mercantile has tall windows, which sun can leak into from around the tall surrounding buildings. However, the cozy back bar is tucked in far enough that you don’t need to fear the heat, making this a darn swell spot to get away from the hot downtown streets. I suggest a Bandit Queen, with blanco tequila, mezcal, lime, habanero tincture, basil and strawberry shrub.

Hotel Albatross, Ballard: Another that does have a small outdoor seating area, and a section near windows. But ignore those spots, and duck into the bar area farthest from any outdoor rays. The low-ish lighting and the cooling ambiance will help you forget the temperatures. But the icy tiki drinks are what really take the edge off. Try a beautifully blended Missionary’s Downfall, with rum, mint, peach brandy, and pineapple and think of the sea, without feeling the sun.

Knee High Stocking Co., Capitol Hill: The fine speakeasy-loving folks here understand those who avoid bright natural light – enough that they cover up all the windows. Make a reservation and get in away from the season while sipping on a cuddly El Diablo. If you come in hot, this drink’s refreshing reliable combination of Cabrito Reposado tequila, Crème de Cassis, lime juice, and ginger beer is sure to bring down the heat and up the cool.
