There’s a special kind of magic that happens at the best restaurants, when everything comes together—charming service, scintillating company, great ambiance, flattering lighting (outstanding food is a must, of course)—and we walk out feeling as if dinner was worth every penny spent, even when we cringe a little the next day thinking about exactly how many pennies we spent.

Each year, for the annual Best Restaurants issue, our critics go from luxe to low brow (and everywhere in between) in search of great tastes. This year, we went at the task with a new measuring stick: We wanted to find restaurants that leave us walking on air, but with the feeling that we absolutely got our money’s worth.

The reason: There’s value at every price point. It’s easy to see the value in a $3 sandwich or a $6 lunch plate (and we’ve put together quite a list of those). But we’ve also walked away happily paying $50, $60, even (gasp!) $200 a person for the ultimate dining experience. From economical to extravagant, our picks here are worth every buck.
