How I spent a Saturday Morning Chatting with Chelsea Clinton

Our managing editor stopped by the University Book Store for a meet and greet

I was on my way to check out two new additions to the University Village earlier this month: Amazon’s new brick and mortar store, Amazon Books, and Evergreens, a sleek Seattle salad spot with two other locations downtown.

But something made me stop along the way. Maybe it was all the years we’ve watched, with shock and awe, the ups and downs of her iconic — and enigmatic—father. Or perhaps I simply needed to see for myself how she was doing during her mother’s presidential campaign. More likely, I just wanted to meet Chelsea Clinton, because she’s carving her own niche in the country’s cultural landscape—and she just wrote a book for young people, It’s Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired & Get Going! Chelsea was signing her books at the University Book Store that day, and there was a sizeable line behind me.

This gave me approximately three minutes with her, long enough to get my photo taken and ask her some hard-hitting “gotcha” questions, such as, “How old is your little girl?” We chatted about her book, which tells young readers how other children and teens have made a difference in their communities.

And we talked about the non-stop Seattle rain, coming down in sheets that gray Saturday afternoon. She didn’t mind it at all, she said.
