Middle East Mash-Up

When a healthy and substantial lunch is needed, I turn again and again to the Shakshuka at Eltana Bagels ($8.75). Traditionally served for breakfast in the Middle East (but available from 11 a.m. on at Eltana), the warm stew of roasted tomatoes and tender green bell and red jalapeño peppers vibrates with heat. It’s topped with two creamy-yolked poached eggs and a bit of feta cheese, and garnished with chopped parsley. Here, instead of the traditional dipping bread—pita—you’ll get your choice of wood-fired bagel. I usually keep the healthy streak alive with a sesame-wheat, but if you opt for the “everything” bagel, you’ll get the added benefit of poppy seeds, onion and salt, fine complements to the full flavors already in the bowl.
