Maria Chapman, Pacific Northwest Ballet’s principal dancer, has announced her retirement. According to Pacific Northwest Ballet Artistic Director Peter Boal “In her 21st season with PNB, Maria has made the difficult decision to retire from the stage. Maria’s career has been filled with extraordinary roles, but it is her most recent real-life role, as mother or precious Eleanor, that has quickly become her favorite.” Ms. Chapman has had successful career with PNB since her apprenticeship in 1995. In 1996 she was promoted to corps de ballet, soloist in 2005 and principal in 2009. In her statement Ms. Chapman said “I feel blessed to leave the stage happy and healthy and with two decades of wonderful memories, on and offstage. I fully enjoyed my last performances with PNB, dancing three wonderful ballets, with the entire company, in the EMERGENCE program, and I can end my career on a high note.”

Could Seattle be the home of the West Coast’s largest skyscraper? According to King5 News, the proposed building would be located at the corner of 4th and Columbia, across from the Columbia Tower, and would greatly alter Seattle’s skyline. At 101 stories high, the skyscraper would house 1,200 condos, 165,000 square feet of office and retail space, and 150 hotel rooms. King5 News reports that, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, the building could affect flight paths to Boeing and Harborview Medical Center. However, developers are confident the project will be approved and it may not be long before this architectural mammoth reaches into the Seattle skies.

Seattle’s loss to Arizona Sunday evening hit hard this week. Fox Sports reports that the Seahawks were unable to make their way back into the NFC west race after this week’s defeat by the Cardinals. Coach Pete Carroll explains, “It’s real frustrating because we know we can play and we’re just not there the way we need to be yet. So the battle of this season is to find it.” The Cardinals would need to suffer an unexpected collapse to let Seattle back into contention at this point.

On Monday Seattle City Council Members voted to allocate an additional $2.3 million in emergency funding to fight the city’s expanding homeless crisis. KOMO News reports that the funding will provide shelter beds, daycare services, and outreach services. Mayor Ed Murray issued a statement in praise of the council members’ decision. “I appreciate the Council’s approach to our work to address our current state of emergency on homelessness. We are a generous city, as the council has shown yet again. But, Seattle cannot do it alone. The state federal governments must step up and do more as well. The issue must once again be a national priority.”
