Scoop: Online Pie

Chris Porter delivers homemade dessert door to door from Seattle’s first online pie shop

It’s a classic American story: Chris Porter, a former TV news reporter in Indiana, was at a crossroads in his career when he decided to reject the obvious path in favor of pursuing a lifelong dream—a life of pie. “I grew up making pie in my mother’s kitchen,” he says. “I’m a huge pie fanatic.” In June he launched A la Mode Pies (alamodeseattle.com), an online pie-delivery service accepting orders as little as 24 hours in advance of your pie needs. Borrowing the kitchen at Capitol Hill’s Knee High Stocking Co. (where A la Mode pies are on the menu), Porter makes his pies ($25 per 9-inch, $35 per petite pie sampler) with handmade crusts, “a little bit of love,” and, whenever possible, organic and local ingredients. The menu rotates seasonally (try the apple-pear this month), but some best-sellers, such as the decadent chocolate-caramel pecan tart and his signature white chocolate banana cream pie, are always available. Pies can be ordered months ahead online and are brought straight to your door (within the greater Seattle area; free delivery). Porter says he hopes to have a retail space eventually, but for now, there seem to be few complaints when a fresh, homemade pie arrives on the doorstep.
