Kelley Moore's tips on outfitting your home for autumn

Category: NW Home Articles

FALL IS MY FAVORITE TIME OF YEAR: brightly colored leaves begin to fall, the air is crisp and we begin to feather our nests. Turning the page of the calendar finds me searching for ways to bring a hint of a new season into each room of my home. After a warm summer, when fall hits, I look for ways to warm up my space, and adding textural elements seems to be a simple solution. Here are a few of my favorite fall finds.

Kelley Moore is a lifestyle and entertaining expert for NWH and Seattle magazines.

Candlelight adds a soft illumination to a room that is difficult to capture with other types of lighting. These Roost Polished Antler Candlesticks ($49 small, $59 large, Area 51, 401 E Pine St., Seattle; 206.568.4782) provide the opportunity to incorporate an organic element into your design. Each candlestick is cast in recycled aluminum from real antlers and burnished to a high polish adding a touch of sophistication.

For a quick transformation from summer to fall, add a couple of highly textured throw pillows to your sofa, bed or armchair. These narrow leather Oly pillows ($120 small, $240 large; Seva Home, 900 Lenora St., No. 116, Seattle; 206.323.9920) add a sense of masculinity, while the intricate weave is an unexpected surprise.

A fireplace becomes the centerpiece for cool autumn evenings, but how can you recreate that ambience if you live in a condo, or a house, without a fireplace? EcoSmart has solved the dilemma of creating a cozy, firelit environment, while remaining environmentally friendly. The EcoSmart Fire is flue-less and doesn’t require installation or a utility connection for its fuel supply, clean-burning ethanol, which makes it ideal for just about any environment. The best part is that it is virtually maintenance free. For pricing, starting at $2,100, contact Inform (1220 Western Ave., Seattle; 206.622.1608).

Adding an area rug can be expensive, but it is an easy way to transform the overall look of a room while adding warmth, especially by choosing a rug with a graphic element. These options are by Kelly Wearstler, hotel design goddess, who brings glamour to the floor with her 2008 rug collection.
