The orchards of Tieton Cider Works

WHERE: Tieton, Washington, located in sunny Yakima Valley. WHY: For the TIETON OPEN HOUSE (4/26, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Free. Mighty Tieton Warehouse; mightytieton.com). WHAT: Tieton is a tiny town with big plans. In recent years, a group of boosters has worked to turn Tieton—once an agriculturally based burg—into an incubator for artisan businesses. The open house showcases the fruits of these efforts, by way of the Tieton Pop-Up Market, featuring products from Tieton Cider Works, Tieton Farm & Creamery, Paper Hammer Studios printmaking as well as locally made honey. Young visitors will also appreciate making mosaics and exploring Trimpin’s Mighty Tieton Sound Space, with its clever and clanging assemblage of user-triggered instruments. A SQUARE DEAL: With financial backing from the National Endowment for the Arts, Tieton’s latest endeavor is to develop a mosaic studio business that employs local workers to produce and market art-quality custom mosaic signs for businesses in Tieton and far beyond. Stop by the open house to see mosaics in progress and soak in the spirit of this little town that could.
