Three Seattle ice cream stops to dip into right now

It’s freaking hot. And we have no idea how much longer it will last. Between last-minute camping trips and back-to-school shopping, make some time to indulge in some new frozen treats.

Nutty Squirrel, Phinney Ridge

After three years in Maple Valley (26636 Maple Valley-Black Diamond Road SE, Suite H-100), the family behind Nutty Squirrel has opened a second location in Phinney Ridge (7212 Greenwood Ave North) in which you can enjoy their small-batch, hand-crafted and seasonal gelatos and sorbettos. We’re partial to the stracciatella and pistachio gelato pops. Open noon to 9 p.m. daily.

Hot Cakes, Capitol Hill

Hold on to your molten chocolate cakes. A second Hot Cakes has opened in Capitol Hill (1650 E. Olive Way) offering the most insanely delicious caramel pudding and soft-serve vanilla ice cream with an all-organic smoked chocolate magic shell (yes!) and candied toppings, including cacao nib toffee and – wait for it – potato chips. Open 4 to 11 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays; until midnight on Fridays; 10 a.m. to midnight on Saturdays; and until 11 p.m. Sundays.

Cupcake Royale – Ballard, Madrona, Capitol Hill, Queen Anne, West Seattle, Downtown

So, it’s not a new spot but Cupcake Royale’s epic summer chef series is nearing its end so you’ll need to stop by and experience what flavors August has in store. Chef Josh Henderson’s (Westward) flavor, Strawberry Frappe n Fries, is inspired by the all-American pastime of dipping French fries in milkshakes. Chef Tamara Murphy (Terra Plata) wows with saffron with honey almond crunch and Canlis’ new chef Brady Williams is behind the Anise Hyssop (a perennial herb in the mint family that has the flavor of licorice) and Olive Oil flavor. Hours vary by location.
