UPDATE: We’re told that Bertha will start digging sometime tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday, July 30). The exact time is still not confirmed.

The definite date that our 7,000-ton earth-drilling machine known as Bertha will begin boring a tunnel to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct looks to be Monday, according to officials at the Washington State Department of Transportation. Though the time is still undetermined. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, if you haven’t seen these short videos on Ms. B’s inner workings and how she’ll make her two-mile journey beneath downtown Seattle, you really should check them out.
