You may know her as the former roller derby star of Seattle’s Rat City Rollergirls, but Angela Jacobs is also a decorated, world-traveled winemaker.

After graduating from University of Washington with degrees in biochemistry and cell and molecular biology, Jacobs harvest-trotted her way through Austria, Greece and Italy and returned to the Pacific Northwest, where she worked in the Willamette Valley before settling into Lake Chelan with two tons of ultra-premium Red Mountain fruit and the idea for WineGirl Wines.

Now, Jacobs, who is known for merlot, cabernet sauvignon and (2014 Seattle Wine Awards Double Gold) Kamari Chardonnay, has opened a second tasting room in Leavenworth with a grand opening slated for 5 to 9 p.m. Jan. 30. The opening coincides with the formal release of Jacobs’ Reserve Malbec. The grapes hail from Upland Vineyard in the Yakima Valley and are blended with malbec from Antoine Creek Vineyard just north of Lake Chelan. The wine was aged in French and American oak for 23 months.

It’s is our vote for a weekend getaway now that the holiday crowds have thinned and there’s a new winery in town. Appetizers and live music all night. As if you needed another excuse.
