You don’t need us to tell you that America is politically divided; we may be even more so after the midterms and the holidays (you know how Uncle Fred can get). But a handful of events this month are designed to connect rather than separate us:

1/2 Bring a book, have a drink and enjoy the quiet company of your fellow readers at another of the Hotel Sorrento’s silent reading parties in the cozy Fireside Room. 6 p.m. Free. Hotel Sorrento, First Hill, 900 Madison St.; 206.622.6400

1/4–1/6 Join your voice in song with strangers—and boo at Nazis—at the 5th Avenue’s sing-along screening of The Sound of MusicTimes vary. $35. 5th Avenue Theatre, downtown, 1308 Fifth Ave.; 206.625.1900

1/11 Chill out to Jesse Myers playing Philip Glass’ rippling, soothing piano etudes; bring a mat or pillow, get comfortable and enjoy the synchronized light projections. 8 p.m. Prices vary. Chapel Performance Space at Good Shepherd Center, Wallingford, 4649 Sunnyside Ave. N; 206.457.5967; waywardmusic.org

1/26–4/28 Ditch, a performance-meets-installation piece created by Cherdonna Shinatra, alter ego of dancer Jody Kuehner, is accompanied by her self-described goal, to counter the current state of the world by “making every single person happy.” Times vary. Free. Frye Art Museum, First Hill, 704 Terry Ave.; 206.622.9250
