Outdoors: Arboretum Aglow

Free guided tours of Washington Park Arboretum this Sunday...

By Roddy Scheer November 15, 2010

Even though time is ticking on our leaf-peeping season here in the Pacific Northwest, check out the last vestiges of Fall color on a free guided walk through the Washington Park Arboretum.

This Sunday (Nov. 21), from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (meet at the Graham Visitor Center), you can take advantage of a free docent-led tour following November’s theme at the Arboretum: Fruits, Nuts & Wildlife. Among other stops on the walking tour, you’ll get up close and personal with plants such as oaks and walnuts that attract wildlife. Later on that day, from 1-2:30 p.m., is the Tour du Jour, which folows the whim of the attending docent to focus on the seasonal highlights of the Arboretum’s vast collection of plants.

Frederick Law Olmsted, the great landscape architect, said that parks and trees are the “lungs of the city.” If you want to breathe in some of the freshest air around, head for the Arboretrum this weekend, or any old time.
