Hello, Again, Hello
Thursday - Saturday (5/12 - 5/14) - At least that’s how it feels when Rachel Kessler and Sierra Nelson, aka the Vis-à-Vis Society (formerly known as two out of three in The Typing Explosion), conduct their live poetry experiments. In this new show, Hello, Again, Hello (part of the Northwest Film Forum’s “Live” series) the literary ladies tackle everything from contagious loneliness to bioluminescence. 8 p.m. Prices vary. Honk! Fest West
Friday - Sunday (5/13 - 5/15) - Honk! Fest West, Seattle’s “radical marching band festival,” proves that it really is best to march to the beat of your own drummer. Twenty-four marching bands from five states will gather at different locations around Seattle to blare horns and play drums in spirited musical celebrations (similar to the famous “second lines” popular in the brass band parades of New Orleans). The fourth annual fest will host bands including the Seahawks’ Blue Thunder Drumline and Seattle’s own Tubaluba band. Times and venues vary. Free. honkfestwest.com
Seattle Chinese Garden Open House
Sunday (5/15) - The Seattle Chinese Garden celebrates the opening of its new court yard with an afternoon of lion dance, traditional music, Wu Shu and Tai Chi demonstrations, Chinese calligraphy and painting. 3-5 p.m. Free. The Seattle Cheese Festival
Saturday & Sunday (5/14 & 5/15) - The ultimate event for cheese lovers, the Seattle Cheese Festival offers tastings, demonstrations and expertly-taught seminars. Though the festival is free, seminars cost $40 per person (register online to save your spot; includes wine and cheese tasting) and are held in the PDA conference room (85 Pike Street). Here are a few to sample:
• 5/14 (12 p.m.) The Genuine Pecorino Romano is considered the pinnacle of grating cheeses, but this perfectly salty and sharp sheep’s milk cheese is much more than just a pasta topping. This seminar tells you why.
• 5/14 (2 p.m.) Is My Cheese Safe? Last year, four American cheese makers shut down because of concerns over safety (read more on page 89). If you’ve ever wondered about cheese safety, this seminar’s for you.
• 5/15 (10 a.m.) Leather-bag mavens Miles and Lilian Cahn (former owners of Coach, Inc.) have moved on to a life of cheese-making bliss in New York’s Hudson Valley. Sample Coach Farm cheese—and hear the whole story—in “From Leather Bags to Curds and Whey.”
