With the Olympic Sculpture Park and 80 degree sunshine as our backdrop, more than 450 guests (including a fleet of brave navy sailors) came, saw and sipped the night away. There were plenty of reds, whites and brews to be had--17 Washington wine award-winners and six local breweries poured their famed varietals while Taste Events, Sartori Cheese, Oil & Vinegar and Belle Epicurean offered savory salumi and cheese and delectable desserts.

Nihonmachi Nite is this Saturday (August 11; 4-9pm). A free community event celebrating the history of Seattle's Japantown, several shops, restaurants and the Wing Luke Museum are offering special programming or discounts throughout the evening. Tonight is National Night Out! That means many Seattle neighborhoods will close residential streets and host festive block parties, all in the name of taking a stand against crime and building stronger communities (August 9, 6-9pm). After all, you don't have much of a community if you don't know (or like) your neighbors.

On National Root Beer Float Day, I cannot help feeling a little bummed. Getting in the car to drive to A&W just isn’t going to cut it. As far as I can tell, the nearest old-fashioned soda fountain is 260 miles away, at Lincoln County Pharmacy in Davenport, one of those sleepy towns on Highway 2. When classic goodies like pie and cupcakes have become so retro cool, why hasn’t anybody seized on updating the soda fountain?

Here I sit on the veranda at Glacier Park Lodge, watching the ever restless clouds dance along the spires and humps of Glacier National Park, the whole scene lit by the warm rays of the late afternoon “golden hour.” I can relate to those fast-moving clouds; in fact I feel like one of them as my two kids and I are in the middle of a 1,500 mile “school’s out” odyssey-by-van from Seattle into the wilds of Montana.
