Congrats to the 15 local artists on The Stranger's shortlist for the Genius Awards (released today)! I'm a big fan of this year's list—especially since in past years Seattle mag has selected several of the Genius nominees as winners of our own Spotlight Award. The Genius winners won't be announced until September 22, but meanwhile, you can read up on a few of the nominees via the previous profiles I've written...

MUST MOM The Jewelry Art of Mary Lee HuOngoing - Local artist Mary Lee Hu has been hand crafting stunning jewelry for 40 years, weaving gold and silver wire—as if it were thread—into exquisite neckpieces, rings and brooches. More than 90 impossibly fluid designs comprise a glittering retrospective at BAM—the perfect place to go to let Mom know she’s as good as gold. Bonus: the museum is offering 2-for-1 admission on Mother's Day.

It's really too bad that news blog PubliCola is suspending publication. However, we're glad to hear that its senior contributors Josh Feit and Erica C. Barnett will continue to cover news part-time over at Crosscut. Both Feit and Barnett were included in our "Most Influential People of 2011" list. Here's what Seattle mag contributor Karen Johnson had to say about them then:

We’ve never met a mom who turned down a good pedicure, and Julep (multiple locations including Bellevue, downtown Seattle, U District and Gig Harbor) is always a great gift choice. Their parlor menu includes dozens of options and upgrades, and Julep Nail Color does not contain formaldehyde or any other nasties.

Lucky Lake Union neighbors, you have scored quite a spring treat! The Farmboat Floating Market is happening! Every Thursday, starting this week (5/10, 11am-3pm), you can shop for fresh produce and locally crafted treats aboard the "Virgina V." The historic 125' steamship used to haul goods between Seattle and Tacoma in the early 20th century.

On May 26, our promotional partners Seattle Mariners will channel the year 1957, donning classic red and cream Rainiers uniforms as they rumble with the Los Angeles Angels for the Seattle magazine–sponsored Turn Back the Clock Night at Safeco Field. As part of the festivities, fans will receive a Grease-inspired poster featuring catcher Miguel Olivo, shortstop Brendan Ryan, and pitchers Brandon League and Jason Vargas.

Bumbershoot (9/1-9/3) announced its 2012 music lineup today, featuring mainstage acts Jane's Addiction, Tony Bennett, Skrillex and more. On the regular lineup are The Vaselines, Blitzen Trapper and, of course, a few local acts, including, Damien Jurado, Sera Cahoone and THEE Satisfaction. And of course, there's also a very long list of groups to discover, if you haven't heard them yet. See the full list below, or watch this cute promo video which spells it all out with an old school flair. Of note this year: certain days of the festival will feature (in addition to lots of other programming) a more specialized focus on blues, jazz or metal, for example, so hardcore fans of those genres can see more of what they want with less time cursing indie rockers. There's also late-night electronic music curated in partnership with the Decibel Festival, a new stage (The Promenade) planned outside McCaw Hall and a stage dedicated almost entirely to Sub Pop acts. More details and tickets at bumbershoot.org. Read the current music lineup from the press release after the jump:

Wending through the creaky, unlit passages that served as intermissions during the nearly four-hour long Café Nordo’s Cabinet of Curiosities "show", I couldn’t stop thinking about Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.

It's been quite a seven years for Michelle Quisenberry and her chef-husband Don Curtiss, and quite a seven years for Old Ballard Ave. When Volterra opened on the historic street in 2005, few of the current businesses had yet to open: no Bastille, Moshi Moshi, no Walrus & Carpentor or any of the slew of new bars and eateries farther south on that narrow road.

In addition to improving our website’s overall navigation so it’s easier for you to browse the content you are most interested in, we’re working on a pretty thorough overhaul of our online archives and other digital tools. And we will continue to add new content every day.

Awesome as it is, most of us usually feel like we need a good reason to have dinner at the Space Needle's restaurant, SkyCity. Your Uncle Bob and Aunt Harriet are visiting from Muskogee. Your boyfriend wants to put a ring on it.
