What’s your favorite current Seattle band? If you have trouble answering (or if you draw a blank after Macklemore), we’re not going to judge. But we are going to suggest it’s time to check in with the city’s thriving indie music scene. New local bands are exploring sounds, blurring genre boundaries (though we’ve wrestled them into categories here) and playing vibrant live shows all over town (see our Live Music Venue guide).

The annual Pioneer Square Fire Festival returns to Occidental Square Park August 16-17 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Great Seattle Fire that happened on June 6, 1889. On that infamous day of the most destructive fire in the city’s history, a combustible pot of glue destroyed some 64 acres of the Central Business District despite the volunteer firefighters’ efforts, who needed more than the privately owned water mains available to save the wooden buildings.

Local music purveyor Seattle Living Room Shows has teamed up with Lake Union Charters & Adventures to put on an evening outdoor concert on a boat with a deck transformed into a sandy beach. On August 26 at 6:45 p.m. sharp, the intrepid Trek (a car-and-passenger ferry turned leisure zone) shoves off into the evening sun for a three-hour tour of Lake Union made pret-ty fantastic by live music and the fact that you’ll either be dancing or lounging in a beach chair (bring your own!), toes and boozy drink nestled comfortably in the sand.
