Last year saw the blossoming of the Lumbersexual, the urban hipster guy who dresses like Paul Bunyan. Seattle, Portland and Brooklyn are where the style has taken root.

Seattle’s oldest neighborhood has seen boom times and busts over its 162-year history. It’s experienced prospectors and panhandlers, full occupancy and devastating vacancies. It is home to an arts crowd and a homeless community that coexist in a tenuous relationship. And these days, with a recent influx of notable restaurants, it is one of the most buzzed-about and desirable neighborhoods—and suddenly the place to set up shop.

From royal coins to Lands’ End totes, monograms have long been deployed to add a special, personalized touch to another otherwise mundane items. It was that desire to add meaning that inspired Bellevue-based artist Maja Arnold to create distinctive monogram necklaces, cast in sterling silver, white or yellow gold, using a bold, modern font.

After breaking his foot for the second time, Pacific Northwest Ballet dancer Jordan Pacitti hung up his pointe shoes in 2010 to follow a different dream. Inspired by his love of fragrances—and with help from PNB’s Second Stage program, which financially assists dancers in pursuing new careers—he earned his aesthetician license from Gary Manuel Aveda Institute on Capitol Hill, and started Jordan Samuel Skin with an initial focus on perfumes.

There's a new breed of men, from Ballard to Brooklyn.  It's the bearded, flanneled hipster, otherwise known as the "Lumbersexual."   Those are two words you rarely hear together. My dad used to work in logging camps in the 1930s and I heard his incredible stories at the dinner table, including ones I won’t repeat here dealing with the sex lives of the lonely, brutal men who worked with him. Let's just say that no one really wants to be on the business end of a horny lumberjack. Really, truly. No one.

Of course we should currently be on the lookout for gifts for others. (This little wonder notes there are a mere 41 days and 10 hours left until Christmas. Oy vey.) But I see no problem with slipping a sable or two for moi in with my handpicked gifts for friends and family. I do what I feel like.
