Aside from just about everything they carry, one of the best things about West Elm is how they partner with interesting local talent for fun in-store events. And in the next few weeks, just in time for burgeoning thoughts of holiday gift giving, they’re hosting two fun-sounding events that should not be missed.
You probably know the brand Calypso St. Barth as a go-to for summer tunics and flowing resort wear, but trust us, it offers some pretty great cozy-chic fall/winter options as well including some pretty luxe cashmere sweaters, sleek embroidered Boho velvet pieces, beaded silk, supple leather and loads of other fashionable treats.
As Seattleites well know, dressing in rain-repellent gear from head to hips isn’t always sufficient—some days we still show up soaked through at the thighs. But rain pants are not only cumbersome, they’re also seriously unflattering (and, let’s be honest, a little demoralizing). Enter the Wander Wrap, a new waterproof wrap skirt that snaps on at the waist and keeps whatever you’re wearing warm and dry.
Not every little girl grows out of her tomboy phase. That’s the inspiration behind TomboyX, the clothing and accessories line specifically designed for women who want menswear-inspired clothes that are tailored for a woman’s body. West Seattleites Fran Dunaway and Naomi Gonzalez and Wallingford resident Barb Gauld—who range in age from late 30s to early 50s—launched TomboyX earlier this year after a successful Kickstarter campaign.
The taste of rejuvenation is quite literally in the air in Bellevue. German natives Annett and Matthias Riebe moved from Bavaria to Bellevue about two years ago to introduce the healing powers of salt therapy to the Northwest. Their Salt Mine Arium (Bellevue, 1850 130th Ave. NE, Suite 4; 425.497.9666; saltminearium.com) opened in January and is the area’s first spa fully dedicated to halotherapy, a salt vapor treatment thought to help alleviate the symptoms of some respiratory ailments.
Personal Chops: With a full plate as a freelance stylist for Nordstrom, Seattle Bride, Seattle mag and a bevy of well-known local superstars, including Jinkx Monsoon, Hey Marseilles, The Maldives, Ray Dalton and man of the moment, Macklemore, Folks’ star is most definitely on the rise. Well-known in local fashion circles for her ever-present sense of humor, fantastic eye and tasteful risk taking, she says, “I’m actively offended by playing it safe. I have this saying, ‘Try to branch out; if that’s too scary—twig.’”
Just got word that Gucci will be opening an 8,000 square foot store at The Bravern sometime in 2014. The Italian luxury retailer is taking over the spaces previously occupied by Piazza Sempione, Brooks Brothers and DNA 2050.
The new Gucci (the second in the Seattle-area, joining a downtown store) is intended to be a world flagship location for the brand.
A year after launching their partnership with Topshop in 14 stores nationwide (including the Southcenter location) and online, Nordstrom has announced an expansion of their popular store-within-a-store to Bellevue Square, bringing the total number of Nordstrom/Topshop collabs to 42 nationwide.
Back in the day, I owned a small online boutique that I stocked with apparel, accessories and art from small indie businesses from the Pacific Northwest. One of my fave finds was Portland jeweler (artist? genius?), Stephanie Simek, whose false eyelash and real quail’s egg necklaces were some of my inventory.

Like Halley’s Comet, a sample sale from esteemed local designer (and an Editor's Choice from our September issue) Carole McClellan doesn’t come around very often, so when it does, you should know about it and attend it. Especially if you’re a fan of McClellan’s masterful use of vintage fur, repurposed leather and rock and roll vibe.
Hobnob with footwear giant Steven Madden on Saturday, October 12 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Bell Square Nordstrom, along with TV personality and brand ambassador Julissa Bermudez (106 & Park, Empire Girls). Madden will be taking photos with shoppers and signing complimentary tee shirts and tote bags. There will be a surprise guest DJ, a chance to win a pair of Steven Madden shoes and a special gift with a Steven Madden purchase.
Michael Cepress is on roll. A successful Kickstarter campaign made his men’s and women’s ready to wear collections a reality, he orchestrated a successful runway show and the recent launch of his online store has taken his clothing to the masses.
Nordstrom is launching a new concept this week, a pop-in, rather than a pop-up, I suppose—an series of themed shops at only eight stores, including the downtown flagship.
The first pop-in, which opened October 10, is French Fling, a curated selection of French-inspired goods, from clothing to accessories for both men and women, including items from Rodarte, Repetto, A.P.C. and Kenzo.
The Nordstrom Men’s Shop and GQ Fall 2013 Runway Show, benefiting the Detlef Schrempf Foundation at the recent Fashion Week at The Bellevue Collection, was all about accessible fashion, and of course, the models. Several local male celebrities, including Steve Hauschka of the Seattle Seahawks, Michael Gspurning and Andy Rose of the Seattle Sounders, Brian and J.P.
