Since researching our June article on the shaky state of local resident orca populations, I’ve been waiting for the report from NOAA’s local office, hoping they could determine what killed L112, also known as "Sooke" or "Victoria." The young female southern resident killer whale washed up dead on the Long Beach Peninsula this February, bruised and swollen, particularly around her head and neck.

Listen, Seattle sweet tooths: Give Neil Robertson a break! His Crumble & Flake has been selling out of scones, croissants and cookies in mere hours (sometimes in just 1 hour!) every day since it opened a few weeks back.

The email got me dreaming: Seattle mag writer Joe Follansbee sent word that his new book, the Fyddeye Guide to America’s Lighthouses, is now available. Joe, a consummate storyteller and maritime expert, has a boundless enthusiasm for these beautiful and historic beacons, as do I, after a weird and wonderful week I spent living in one as a "lighthouse keeper" a few years back.

Recently, the Seattle mag team piled into a minivan (yep, that’s how we do it) to watch a preview of Safety Not Guaranteed, an adorable romantic comedy about a man’s mysterious mission to find the right partner to travel back in time with him. Bonus: it was shot in Washington state (go film incentive!).

Congrats to the 15 local artists on The Stranger's shortlist for the Genius Awards (released today)! I'm a big fan of this year's list—especially since in past years Seattle mag has selected several of the Genius nominees as winners of our own Spotlight Award. The Genius winners won't be announced until September 22, but meanwhile, you can read up on a few of the nominees via the previous profiles I've written...

MUST MOM The Jewelry Art of Mary Lee HuOngoing - Local artist Mary Lee Hu has been hand crafting stunning jewelry for 40 years, weaving gold and silver wire—as if it were thread—into exquisite neckpieces, rings and brooches. More than 90 impossibly fluid designs comprise a glittering retrospective at BAM—the perfect place to go to let Mom know she’s as good as gold. Bonus: the museum is offering 2-for-1 admission on Mother's Day.

It's really too bad that news blog PubliCola is suspending publication. However, we're glad to hear that its senior contributors Josh Feit and Erica C. Barnett will continue to cover news part-time over at Crosscut. Both Feit and Barnett were included in our "Most Influential People of 2011" list. Here's what Seattle mag contributor Karen Johnson had to say about them then:

We’ve never met a mom who turned down a good pedicure, and Julep (multiple locations including Bellevue, downtown Seattle, U District and Gig Harbor) is always a great gift choice. Their parlor menu includes dozens of options and upgrades, and Julep Nail Color does not contain formaldehyde or any other nasties.

Lucky Lake Union neighbors, you have scored quite a spring treat! The Farmboat Floating Market is happening! Every Thursday, starting this week (5/10, 11am-3pm), you can shop for fresh produce and locally crafted treats aboard the "Virgina V." The historic 125' steamship used to haul goods between Seattle and Tacoma in the early 20th century.
