Like so many in the community, the staff here at Seattle mag was shocked at the news that local chef and former owner of the now-closed restaurant Nettletown, Christina Choi died yesterday (December 28) from complications caused by a brain aneurysm. She was only 34.

MUST SING ALONGLeRoy Bell and His Only FriendsThis former Tacoma postal worker-turned-songwriter for Elton John has been playing intimate live shows in Seattle for years, but since being a finalist on TV’s The X Factor last fall, he’s landed a gig at The Moore for a special New Year’s Eve concert. Chances are, if they're open on New Year's Eve, they're trying to lure you in with promises of bubbly and revelry and invocations of Prince songs which shall not be named. It's a little overwhelming trying to filter through the barrage sent out over the last week, so I've tried to boil it down to a roundup of best bets, depending on where your priorities lie, with a few equally-worthy back-up options in case you can't get that reservation. If you want to remember the food:  Book Bindery

Scanning various Pinterest boards this morning, I was annoyed at the copious pins depicting half-dressed fit ladies showing off washboard abs, not to mention a grip of recipes explaining how to puree my favorite vegetables into healthy juices. Um, excuse me. There are 5 more days left in 2011; and I won't be celebrating my surviving another recession year (not to mention other notable milestones) by doing sit-ups.

You’ve got to give to get into the holidays. So for every gift you unwrap this season (or have already unwrapped—cheaters!), try to find a small way to give back...or give forward. Here’s just a few ideas to help get you started (some of them don't cost a thing): ONE WARM COAT

As a kid, you tend to overlook stocking stuffers in favor of those big wrapped presents lurking under the tree, but as an adult, a new discovery awaits: The smallest gifts in stature can often pack the biggest punch (jewelry, tickets to a ballgame, cufflinks). I’m declaring the following list as proof to my point- they may be small, but they are mighty:

Since my toes are still thawing out from my walk to the office this morning, I think it’s safe to state, “Baby it’s cold outside.” And since it is that glorious time of year to snuggle up by the fire and get warm and cozy with a book, I’m devoting today’s gift lineup to all things soft and cuddly.

We could all use a bit of R & R right about now as we all scramble to finish off those last minutes gifts and baked goodies for co-workers, am I right? Thus I am not going to sit here and pontificate: Boys, your ladies will love these sweet beauty items and pampering memberships. Ladies, your girlfriends will, too. Now, zen out.   $20 Julep Nail Salons’ ‘Julep Maven’ membership

In the January issue, I review the charming and very delicious Travelers Thali House on Beacon Hill. It's a bittersweet review for me because the restaurant is so good, so welcoming, and the food is lovely in so many ways. But where is everyone?

It is quite tempting to intro this spirits-, brews- and beer-related post with big exclamation points following a drawn-out exclamation: “Booze!” But I will try to keep things classy and restrain myself. However, thanks to a boom in local distiller and craft brewery products in our fair city, I can’t guarantee your recipient will be able to contain their glee over these gifts:

It is a lot of work to throw a holiday shindig (hey, those cookies don’t frost themselves) and even more work to host relatives (hey, those bathrooms don’t clean themselves either), so show your appreciation for the host or hostess with one of these sweet tokens, or if you hearken back to last week’s post on foodie products, any of those treats make stellar, cost-effective hostess gifts as well.
