Must SeeFirst Thursday art walk: Joey Veltkamp Thursday (3/3) - Seattle artist and local art blogger Joey Veltkamp has a well-documented owl obsession (his last show featured more than 30 papier-mâché owls), but now he’s on to something new—ghosts. For this show, he’s fired more than 20 ceramic spooks, using paint and resin to give a glazing effect. If you haven’t yet encountered the endearing work of this rising star, it’s high time. Seattle mag videographers Alex Kummerow and Dylan Priest headed to Vashon Island last month to tour the alpaca farm that inspired artist and designer Adrienne Antonson’s exclusive new clothing line for Capitol Hill shop NuBe Green. If you're unfamiliar with Antonson's work, you'll know that she sources her line exclusively from items sourced from within 100 miles of Seattle.

If you're climbing the walls in your house with all the bad weather this winter, maybe you should check out one of Seattle's indoor rock climbing gyms. Vertical World (daily rate for non-members: $16; monthly membership: $70) started it all off when it opened the doors on the world's first indoor climbing gym in Ballard back in 1987. These days the company has gyms in five locations around Puget Sound.

I'm thrilled to announce that Fat of the Land author Langdon Cook is our newest columnist at the magazine.  Lang, as he's known by friends, is the kind of guy that, when he says he'll be "off the grid," really means it; he's known to disappear down the coast and up to the wilds of British Columbia for weeks at a time on foraging, fishing and mushroom hunting expeditions.

tiger mom
Some days, I suck at being a tiger mom. It simply requires more attention to monitoring my daughter's work than I have time to devote. On those days when I let my daughter watch TV instead of practice writing letters and numbers, the self-flogging kicks in and, perhaps irrationally, I fret that the one, two or even three missed practice sessions somehow will mean the difference between another year of preschool or early entrance into kindergarten.

I wanted to write a blog entry about HB 1609, the “Great Schools” bill, which was debated in Olympia this week, but failed to move out of committee.  A similar bill in the Senate, SB 5399, was blocked from public hearing by Senator Rosemary McAuliffe, chair of the Senate Committee on Early Learning and K-12 Education.

It's not just awards season in Hollywood; in the food world, nominees for two presigious food awards were announced this week. Every year I anticipate seeing who'll be called out among Food & Wine's Top 10 Best New Chefs on the cover of the July issue. The editors almost always nail the list. This year they've come up with a more brilliant plan: Instead of picking the winners themselves, F&W's editors have selected a list of worthy nominees in 10 regions, and we, the people, get to vote for the nominated chefs.
