Madison Park Conservatory’s Cormac Mahoney was glowing. And it wasn’t just the photo-op bright lights. No, the chef was basking in the steady stream of compliments flowing from the consumers at this weekend's glittering Aspen Food & Wine Classic.
Even after waiting in one of the longest lines of the event, avid food enthusiasts raved about Mahoney’s signature Coco Pork tacos crowned in crispy shoestring potatoes.
Jacques Pepin shook my hand and called me cherie. Talk about the ultimate Rocky Mountain High!
I’m at the 30th annual Aspen Food & Wine Classic, where it’s perfectly possible to bump into the A-list culinary talent. The people who put the celebrity into celebrity chef.
Sure you could get him a tie. Or maybe a wallet. But really, what dad wants is a drink (and don’t you think he deserves one after putting up with you for so long?). After working hard, he wants to sit back with a delicious sipper, relax, have a laugh with family and enjoy the moment. Provide him with a bottle of any of the above and have a drink with him. From now on, every time he makes a cocktail using the bottle you provided, he’ll remember this Father’s Day. And that is, I think, a pretty wonderful thing.
On Thursday, June 14, beloved Grand Central Bakery is offering 25 cent cinnamon rolls as part of its 40th anniversary celebration. 25 cents is the original price from 1972, when the bakery first opened. Nothing can quite top that Tom Douglas/mullet picture (above) shared on the bakery's Facebook page, but here's a charming portrait of those early days from the press release:
No matter what’s happening on the field, going to a Seattle Mariners game is always a huge hit for me. I might even start a blog, detailing every amazing morsel of food I’ve tried around The Safe, home to one of the best food courts on the planet.
What was originally a party featuring 20 Northwest restaurants and 20 local breweries and wineries has mushroomed well beyond the symbolic number 20, but no one seems to be complaining. About half a dozen additional restaurants just announced include Robin Leventhal of Crave Catering and Top Chef fame, Lecosho's Matte Janke, Jeremy McClachlan of Salty's on Alki, plus new winery additions like Goose Ridge Estate, Kestrel Vintners and Rotie Cellars.
OK, so it’s not the most brilliant day for the debut of the Queen Anne Farmers Market. But come on, we’re used to buckets of rain in June, right?
Slip on your Wellies, grab an umbrella and let’s go.
Why?
So, some team that used to be known as the Seattle Supersonics is playing a big game tonight somewhere besides Key Arena. Are we bitter? Just a smidge.
As mentioned in numerous news stories, articles, Tweets, placards, and even an earlier blog post, the booze-selling landscape changes that were voted in WA have actually taken place, taking the selling of spirits and such out of the hands of the state.
Went to the Mother Earth News Fair at the Puyallup Fairgrounds yesterday to hear the "high priest of the pasture" Joel Salatin and, please don't string me up, I was underwhelmed. Oh, he's an entertaining speaker and the enthusiastic shouts of "Amen!" proved he was preaching to the choir. Maybe I was expecting too much, but he didn't bring anything new to the table in terms of serving up concrete advise about how individuals could make the planet a better place. ("We should plant fruit trees in the medians on interstates!" just didn't speak to me.)
There are some showstoppers at the new Collections Cafe, where Crush chef Jason Wilson collaborated on the menu with Space Needle executive chef Jeff Maxfield and resident chef Ivan Szilak. A tart salad tossed with watermelon rind pickles, the pressed pork sandwich wearing a crown of crunchy slaw and prawns bathed in salsa verde top the list.
Nope, you're not having déjà vu: Thierry Rautureau was indeed on Season 2 of Bravo's Top Chef Masters. And now comes a promo proving The Chef in the Hat is returning to compete on Season 4, which premieres July 25th.
As part of our annual Best Restaurant package this April, our foodie team not only ferretted out the best restaurants and happy hours, but the best food trucks as well.
Not only do south-end eaters have the just-opened Cafe con Leche (aka, the reinvented Paladar Cubano) serving up Cubano sandwiches, and the slick-looking Sodo Kitchen at Starbucks for new lunch options (not to mention my longtime standbys Maruta Shoten and Hudson Diner), now there's one more place to check out: The Blu
Listen, Seattle sweet tooths: Give Neil Robertson a break! His Crumble & Flake has been selling out of scones, croissants and cookies in mere hours (sometimes in just 1 hour!) every day since it opened a few weeks back.
