Food-thusiasts everywhere are celebrating Julia Child’s 100th birthday today (Aug.15) with French Chef viewing marathons, a video remix guaranteed to make you grin and all sorts of lavish tribute dinners around the globe. I’m going to mark the centennial by wolfing down a burger at Brave Horse Tavern. Say what?

Pop quiz: Which came first, the still-going-strong Northwest handcrafted beer movement or Latona Pub? That might be a chicken-or-the-egg kind of conundrum, but it’s safe to say Latona near Green Lake helped create legions of microbrew fans since it first opened under current ownership 25 years ago. (The watering hole's history dates back much further, to the Prohibition era. Oh, if only those bar stools could talk, the tales they'd tell!)

When new things happen in Ballard, they usually get done well, but they don't often get done big. Kickin' Boot Whiskey Kitchen, the new concept from the boys behind Matador, makes its presence known from the get-go in a big way: a large neon cowboy boot giddy-upping off the side of a former mill house that looms large over the Ship Canal.

Who doesn't love sitting by the pool with a fruity cocktail on a hot summer's day? It's hard for us to imagine a better afternoon, but it's pretty much impossible to have a yummy-looking drink in hand without the kids begging for a sip. On National Root Beer Float Day, I cannot help feeling a little bummed. Getting in the car to drive to A&W just isn’t going to cut it. As far as I can tell, the nearest old-fashioned soda fountain is 260 miles away, at Lincoln County Pharmacy in Davenport, one of those sleepy towns on Highway 2. When classic goodies like pie and cupcakes have become so retro cool, why hasn’t anybody seized on updating the soda fountain?

The weekend forecast calls for some Sangria! And guess who shared a recipe? The fabu Jamie Boudreau, da man mixing it up at comfy chic cocktail hangout, Canon (click through for location and map). “This is a completely clear sangria that allows you to showcase beautiful seasonal fruit,” he said.

Because the closest most of us will ever get to competing in the Olympics is eating in front of a television. Round out your Olympics-watching experience with these tantalizing food groups.

It’s getting so close, we can almost taste the etouffee. Matthew Lewis – the spicy guy behind the Creole-riffic truck Where Ya At Matt – is on the verge of opening his new brick-and-mortar place in Fre-lingford. Roux has been a work in progress since March, when a major renovation began of the old Buckaroo Tavern, just down the block from the ever-swamped Paseo.

This sorta summerlike weather calls for a toast and this time of year, my glass is full of something pink. I love rosé, and Washington wineries make a bunch of really good ones. When I was sipping around at the Wine Rocks event a few weeks ago, I was so impressed with so many fresh, ever-so-slighty fruity rosé. Here’s my favorite five from that fun evening:

Though there are still those divisive folks who only want to drink a cocktail or a glass of wine, more people are experimenting with wine in mixed drinks. This is a tastily awesome thing, because wine cocktails tend to be very refreshing numbers that are layered in flavor—an ideal kind of combo for the end of July and August, especially as we're celebrating Washington Wine Month and Seattle magazine's 2012 Best Washington Wine Awards.
