Nick Cave at SAM

Fabric sculptor/performance artist/dancer Nick Cave’s art is both otherworldly and grounded in the stuff of reality—wildly colorful head-to-toe “suits” sewn from old sweaters, plastic bags, buttons, human hair and crocheted doilies. His “soundsuits” contain percussive elements (bells, metal scraps) that transform the garments into musical instruments when worn. Watch for spontaneous “dance invasions” around the city (HINT: if you’re near Nordstrom at 4 p.m. today, you’re in for wild treat), when local dancers will don the suits and take them out on the town. Head to the museum after work tonight to see Spectrum Dance Theatre bring the suits to life at special performance from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. (free with admission tonight). Seattle Dances! is one of several local fundraising events demonstrating how the charity-auction format is undergoing a metamorphosis that has audiences getting out of their chairs, shedding formal attire and re-envisioning tradition. Join our very own Editorial Director Rachel Hart as she plays celebrity judge for this evening of dance featuring local celebs (including Leigh Canlis of Canlis Glass, Stacy Lill of DeLille Cellars & O Wines and Tamara Wilson of Wilson PR). If you haven’t heard, pie is the new cupcake. Slice into the city’s latest dessert trend at an event that brings pies to a whole new level of nerdiness. In this judged event, held not coincidentally on “Pi Day” ( 3/14, get it?), competitors submit both a story and a pie (baked from scratch). Hosted at CakeSpy and hosted by Four and Twenty Blackbirds. Nathan Myhrvold’s “Modernist Cuisine”

Critics seem helplessly drawn to hyperbole when it comes to reviewing Nathan Myhrvold’s new encyclopedia of cooking, Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking ($625; modernistcuisine.com). Already considered the guide to molecular gastronomy (the foodie discipline interested in the physics and chemistry of culinary techniques), the tome has been lauded as “the most important book in the culinary arts since Escoffier,” “the cookbook to end all cookbooks” and “unparalleled in its breadth and depth.” Could all the praise be true? That last, at least, isn’t exaggeration: Myhrvold's manifesto clocks in at six volumes and 2,438 pages, covering everything from the history of food preparation to how to use agar, a gelatin-like substance derived from algae. It seems Myhrvold, the former Microsoft chief technology officer, inventor and esteemed nature photographer with a Ph.D. in theoretical and mathematical physics, has added a chef’s hat to his vast collection of crowns. And though we’re all for supporting our local bookstores, you’re better off ordeing the book online where you can find the series for as cheap as $460.
