2011 Most Influential winner, Ben Huh
One of my favorite features of the year is Seattle mag’s Most Influential list, an annual round-up of the people behind the big ideas, deals, projects, changes and news that make our city tick.This morning our advisory board started the difficult task of nominating and debating the 2011 selections. Some nominees stood out from the pack. Others were hotly debated. (Of course, you’ll have to check out our November issue to see who we eventually pick).

One of the hallmarks of summer in Seattle is the arrival of farmers' markets.   There are some wonderful fruits and vegetables coming into season this month like berries, beets, kale, and carrots.  An easy way to make the most of seasonal goods is to incorporate the produce into smoothies.    It’s a great way to try something new or use up the last few morsels before they go bad.  Either way, smoothies are an easy and delicious way to get your eight servings of fruits and vegetables a day and add some variety to your diet.

I feel like we have been looking forward to it forever, and as the excitement mounts, it’s somewhat a relief to say: There is less than a week to go until the big Seamless in Seattle show at the Seattle Art Museum on Wednesday, June 8. Designers are finishing off their top-secret challenge looks, models have been selected and now we just need you there to join in on the fun.

Two recent food trend stories hit my radar within minutes: First Food and Wine declared that the "Farm to ___(fill-in-the-blank)" construction had effectively jumped the shark with the phrase "farm to tumbler" to describe cocktails made with fresh, seasonal produce. A. Greed. I just wish there was an acronym for the Local.Sustainable.Organic.Seasonal contingent. S.O.L.S.? (Too bad those words don't all start with Z's, amIright?) That story led me to read Eater NY's 10 Dead Food Trends story, and boy is that a study in Us vs Them.

Must Experience New StyleSeattle Fashion CompetitionWednesday (6/8) - Our annual Seamless in Seattle competition is jumping off the pages and onto the runway. This year, the top 12 finalists will debut their work in front of a live audience and judging panel at Seattle Art Museum. Each designer will present four looks, the last of which will be crafted two weeks prior, as part of a design challenge (à la Project Runway). Winners will be revealed at the end of the night! (Vote for the “reader’s choice” winner on our Facebook page.) 7:30 p.m.

The old Olympic Sculpture Park Farmers Market has found a new home. The market will debut next week and will take place in the Whole Foods’ parking lot on Thursday afternoons, perfect timing for commuters heading home from work. The market will initially feature 30 local vendors with the hope to expand it to 40 during peak harvest season. Info: Interbay Farmers Market,Whole Foods Parking Lot, Thursdays 3:00-7:00 p.m, starting June 9th.

Spotting one of Seattle's master chefs prowling amid the vibrantly-colored ruffage of Pike Place Market is kind of like catching a lion stalking its prey: you don't want to make a peep lest you interrupt his deep concentration; one false move and the epiphany surrounding the preparation of a fiddlehead fern might get spooked and fly away.

Hey, didja know? We run a column in every single issue featuring a local producer!  Some months it's a farm, as it is this month: Skagit Sun grows those incredible ruby red Shuksan strawberries you'll be eating by the handful later this month.

There was excitement last fall when the news broke that Greg Atkinson, the former Canlis chef, cookbook author (his sixth book, At the Kitchen Table, is due this fall and he's long been a contributor to Pacific Northwest, the Seattle Times Sunday
