Must Hit the Road
West Coast Road Eats

Some say bad food is part of a good road trip—but wouldn’t you prefer to pull over for something tasty? Food writer (and part-time Seattle resident) Anna Roth aims to save us from ourselves this summer with her new book, West Coast Road Eats: The Best Road Eats from San Diego to the Canadian Border (Sasquatch; $22.95), in which she recommends seaside rest stops, including Brady’s Oysters in Aberdeen, Mermaid Deli & Pub in Westport and Jimella’s Seafood Market & Cafe in Ocean Park.

Must Rock
Music Fests!
Friday - Monday (5/27 - 5/30)
  - This year Folklife, along with the usual mix of folk- and culture-infused entertainment, will have a dedicated kids’ stage. All the members of the Kindiependent collective will take part in a free family concert (5/30). And if you missed out on Sasquatch tickets don’t despair. The festival will be broadcasted live by KEXP in partnership with NPR Music. Amongst the local bands that will take the stage: The Long Winters, Fresh Espresso and Minus The Bear. Northwest Folklife: Seattle Center, 305, Harrison St. 206.684.7300; nwfolklife.org. For deails on how and when to listen to KEXP broadcast live from Sasquatch, visit kexp.org.

Must Sip
8 Tall, Cold Ones (Plus 5 Can’t-miss Margaritas)

Seattle’s mixologists are chefs in their own right, and come summer, they’re inspired by the sweet, fresh tastes of the season. Fizzy, chilly and cool make for the best summertime cocktails. Get the scoop on our favorite summer drinks from our 2011 Summer Guide.

Must Taste
Strawberry Shortcake, Seattle Style
Known by their craggy shape and ruffle-collared stem, Shuksan strawberries are largely regarded as the sweetest, most flavorful of all strawberry varieties. Each plump berry is red to the core, with a slight mineral flavor that adds complexity. Shuksan (Japanese for “beautiful taste”) strawberries are available at local farmers’ markets for only a few weeks in summer (see page 102 for more), and their highly perishable nature makes them an eat-it-quick treat. Show off a bevy of these berry beauties in a fluffy ginger biscuit with vanilla gelato for the quintessential summer strawberry shortcake. Get Lorna Yee's Shuksan Strawberry Shortcake recipe.
