Must Steamroll
Letterpress Wayzgoose
Saturday (8/27)

Keep your fingers and toes (and children) close—for the 10th year in a row, the talented kooks at the School of Visual Concepts (SVC) are putting on a wayzgoose, and that means the 2-ton steamroller will be back in action. A letterpress tradition since the 17th century, a wayzgoose was originally a feast to thank the lowly typesetters as fall approached and the days drew shorter, requiring arduous typesetting by candlelight. SVC’s wayzgoose is a much different affair, forgoing food for a feast of letterpress posters, books, cards and ephemera handcrafted by Northwest presses. 8/27. 1–6 p.m. Free. School of Visual Concepts, 500 Aurora Ave. N; 206.623.1560;

Must Road Trip
Oldtime Fiddlers Contest
Saturday (8/27)

Head to Winthrop, Washington, in the Methow Valley for the Big North Cascades Oldtime Fiddlers Contest, to celebrate American folk music via hardcore fiddling competitions for all age divisions, from Pee-Wee to Senior. Bring Your own insect or arachnid for the (oddly unrelated to fiddles) Giant Insect Contest (ages 12 and younger). Ten extra points if the insect is alive; 10 points if it has all its legs; 25 points if the insect bites the judge. From Seattle take I-5 north to the North Cascades Highway and proceed to Winthrop. Watch (and listen!) for Belsby Road. 8/27. $15; kids younger than 12 are free. Spring Creek Ranch, 22 Belsby Road; 509.996.2111;

Must Twang
KEXP Concerts at the Mural: No Depression Night
Friday (8/26)

The fine folks at Seattle’s online alt-country haven No Depression aren’t able to produce their popular outdoor music fest this year, but don’t despair—KEXP has declared one of its free August concerts at the Mural Amphitheatre “No Depression Night,” featuring beloved bands such as Ravenna Woods, Pickwick and Drew Grow and the Pastors’ Wives. That’s better than Prozac. 8/26. 6 p.m. Free. Seattle Center, 305 Harrison St.; 206.684.7200;

Must Downward Dog Paddle
Stand-Up Paddleboard Yoga

In the beginning, there was yoga. Next, hot yoga caught fire. But for Seattleites, even that wasn’t enough of a mind-body challenge. Now, behold WASUP: Washington Stand-Up Paddleboard Yoga. Part of the Washington Surf Academy (, WASUP is the Northwest’s first and only paddleboard yoga series. The WASUP team swears all skill levels are welcome, yogis and klutzes alike. Test the waters with a single class ($23), or hop on board with a multiclass pass (five/$90, 10/$160, one month/$325). Surf Ballard, 6300 Seaview Ave. NW; 206.387.9054;

Must Twist
Brave Horse Soft Pretzel

Tom Douglas’s new Brave Horse Tavern is already a huge hit—see for yourself this weekend with a salty soft pretzel consumed on the sunny patio. Our review is here.
