Hooray for the City of Seattle's Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit ordinance! The Widners took full advantage of the city's new ruling and built an 800-square-foot backyard cottage - which suits their downsizing needs and also subsidizes their new addition and their retirement, as they continue to rent out their original 3000 sq foot home. With the help of Matt Hutchins of Fremont's CAST Architecture, the couple has created a practical and surprisingly spacious cottage, full of light, functionality and green space for the die-hard gardeners. The cottage fits seamlessly into the neighborhood and with radiant-heat bamboo floors, bright open living spaces and charming, space-saving shelving, this two-story, two-bedroom cottage feels as if it's out of a dream.
