In celebration of 90 years, the Henry hosts its first museum-wide exhibition of its contemporary art collection. On view are more than 50 works in a variety of genres and mediums by a range of international artists, including Iranian visual artist Shirin Neshat, German-born photographer Uta Barth and folk artist Jeffry Mitchell.

This exhibit celebrates 65 years of the late Seattle photographer’s work documentating the Central District and Seattle’s African-American community, depiciting residents in ordinary, often intimate, moments of their daily life.

Dec.7, 2017- July 8 2018; 7 pm

Video- and computer-based installations are the favored mediums of Perry, winner of the Seattle Art Museum’s 2017 Gwendolyn Knight and Jacob Lawrence Prize; critique of media sensationalism and institutional racism is a frequent subject. The prize entitles Perry to an exhibit; she previews it at this artist’s talk. 



If acrophobia is the fear of high places, what do you call the fear of seeing others in high places? I used to have it, and the recent photographs of South Korea–born artist Jun Ahn—selfies of her perched in vertiginous spots dangling over the edges of buildings, with nothing between her and the street a zillion feet below—would have freaked me out as a kid. If you still suffer, best avoid this exhibit, though you’ll miss her thoughtful meditations on danger and fragility.
