Secondhand Lions

Sometimes terrible films make for great musicals (see: Xanadu). Such is the hope of The 5th Avenue Theatre as it develops a new musical based on the 2003 movie Secondhand Lions, about two “irascible uncles” suddenly charged with bringing up their nephew. Given the clichéd subtext (those steely exteriors mask hearts of gold!), the theater has a hard row to hoe in order to surpass schlock, but the uncles’ tales of alleged heroism regarding princesses, buried treasure and a powerful sheik have potential for fun. Maybe roller skates would help?
