Fashion + Style: Rite of Spring, tech-ready bags at Hitchcock and the best new nail polish in town-Update!

In reality the first day of spring is March 20th, but for me, nothing heralds the arrival of sunnier days ahead than the annual Art Institute student designer fashion show. This year’s rendition, The Rite of Spring, will be presented by Neiman Marcus and takes place tonight at the Showbox SoDo. Tickets still available at the door; join in the fun as emerging local designers show off their stuff. (Hey, don’t forget about Seattle mag’s own fashion show next Wednesday, too.)

Madrona jewel Hitchcock always has a great selection of unique necklaces, chunky bracelets and killer stone rings, but now, bags from Hong Kong company Seventy Eight Percent have joined the party. These impeccably made messenger bags (picured above) have been crafted with tech gear in mind; your laptop/iPad/Kindle-toting friends will go gaga for these.

These days, there are a lot of “toxin-free” polishes on the market, but Scotch Naturals may be breaking some kind of record: The luxe polish is vegan-friendly, hypoallergenic plus cruelty-, fragrance-, toxin-, and paraben-free. If that isn’t enough to sate you, know that the containers are also biodegradable. And while we love its earth-friendly qualities, we admit the 30 vibrant, rich colors are what really won us over.**

** Uh oh: After editor Rachel Hart gave the nail polish a test-run during a recent pedicure, Seattle mag editors have decided we can’t stand behind this product. “I went to my corner nail salon to give the color a test drive and when the standard top coat was applied, the color essentially “curdled” and dissolved. Karen at The Wax Bar refunded my money for the product without a problem, and no longer carries the product. Too bad–the colors were terrific.”
